Khairul Amin

General Secretary

Khairul Amin is the General Secretary and one of the founding members of the Arakan Rohingya National Council (ARNC), formed to lead the struggle for the emancipation, dignity, and rights of the Rohingya people. An advocate for justice and education, Khairul has dedicated decades to building strong Rohingya institutions and forging alliances that advance the cause of his people.

Born in 1971 in Maungdaw, Arakan State, Myanmar, Khairul grew up in a household deeply rooted in faith and learning. His late father was a Islamic scholar who devoted his life to teaching Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence, leaving a lasting legacy of knowledge and moral guidance.

In 1991, shortly after completing his matriculation examination, Khairul Amin was forced to flee to Bangladesh due to escalating persecution. He joined the influx of refugees in the Morissa refugee camp, an experience that became the turning point in his lifelong dedication to activism. That same year, at the age of 20, he co-founded the Rohingya Refugee Relief and Coordination Committee (RRRCC), an initiative dedicated to supporting Rohingya refugees and coordinating humanitarian relief efforts.

Khairul Amin later pursued higher secondary education and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he deepened his commitment to community empowerment and leadership. In Malaysia, he co-founded the Rohingya Student Development Movement (RSDM) in 1998, serving as Finance Secretary until 2001. The organization played a key role in empowering Rohingya youth through education.

In 2005, after relocating to Norway, Khairul co-founded the Rohingya Community in Norway (RCN), serving as its Finance Secretary until 2011 and as Chairman from 2011 to 2015. In 2012, he co-founded the European Rohingya Council (ERC), serving as Chairman from 2012 to 2015, then as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2024, before returning as Chairman in 2024, a position he continues to hold. Under his leadership, ERC forged strong relationships with the Turkish government and YTB, paving the way for hundreds of Rohingya students to gain access to higher education in Turkey.

With a proven track record of institution-building, diplomatic engagement, and youth empowerment, Khairul Amin has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his people. As a member of the ARNC, he continues his mission to unite the Rohingya voice, challenge injustice, and work toward a future of freedom, equality, and peace in Arakan together with the most prominent activists of the Rohingya community.
