Rohingya mass graves found in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, survivors demand justice

Rights groups have condemned what they say was the massacre of more than 600 Rohingya civilians in western Myanmar. Survivors say entire families were burned alive or executed last year, by the Arakan Army – a powerful rebel group.

Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury has more from Dhaka in Bangladesh, where thousands of Rohingya have sought refuge.

Nay San Lwin is the Co-Chair of the newly formed “Arakan Rohingya National Council”, also known as ARNC. He says survivors are demanding justice and want the UN Security Council to discuss the issue immediately.

আরাকান রোহিঙ্গা ন্যাশনাল কাউন্সিলের পক্ষ থেকে এক বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়, আরাকান আর্মির হাতে রোহিঙ্গা বেসামরিকদের ওপর বর্বর হামলা চালানো হয়েছে, যা আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার আইন এবং যুদ্ধাপরাধের সুস্পষ্ট লঙ্ঘন।

রোহিঙ্গাদের প্রধান রাজনৈতিক সংগঠন আরাকান রোহিঙ্গা ন্যাশনাল কাউন্সিল (এআরএনসি) বুথিডংয়ে সংঘটিত সাম্প্রতিক গণহত্যার তীব্র নিন্দা জানিয়ে একটি আন্তর্জাতিক নিরপেক্ষ তদন্তের দাবি জানিয়েছে।

সোমবার (৪ আগস্ট) কাউন্সিলের পক্ষ থেকে এক বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়, আরাকান আর্মির হাতে রোহিঙ্গা বেসামরিকদের ওপর বর্বর হামলা চালানো হয়েছে, যা আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার আইন এবং যুদ্ধাপরাধের সুস্পষ্ট লঙ্ঘন।

বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়, বুথিডং শহরের দখল নেওয়ার পর আরাকান আর্মির সদস্যরা রোহিঙ্গা গ্রামে ঢুকে নির্বিচারে হত্যাকাণ্ড চালিয়েছে, বহু বাড়িঘর পুড়িয়ে দিয়েছে এবং নারী-শিশুদের ওপর সহিংসতা চালিয়েছে। কাউন্সিলের দাবি অনুযায়ী, শত শত মানুষ নিহত বা আহত হয়েছে এবং হাজার হাজার রোহিঙ্গা নিরাপত্তাহীনতায় এলাকা ছেড়ে পালাতে বাধ্য হয়েছে।

The Arakan Army (AA) killed nearly 600 civilians in Htan Shauk Kan (locally known as Honya Seeri), a Rohingya village in Buthidaung Township, on 2 May 2024, according to eyewitnesses and survivors.

More than a year later, graphic images have emerged from the site. They show human remains—unburied, partly submerged in water, and covered by wild plants.

A – ထန်းရှောက်ခံကျေးရွာမှာ အစုလိုက်အပြုံလိုက် သတ်ဖြတ်မှု ဖြစ်ပွားခဲ့တာ ၂၀၂၄ ခုနှစ် မေလ (၂) ရက်နေ့ကပါ။ အဲဒီတုန်းက ဘူးသီးတောင်မြို့နယ်မှာ ဖုန်းနက်ဝပ် လုံးဝမရှိဘူး။ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒီဖြစ်စဥ်နဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး လူတွေက သတင်းကို အပြင်ရောက်အောင် နည်းလမ်းမျိုးစုံနဲ့ ပို့ပေးခဲ့တယ်။ ကျွန်တော်တို့က ဖြစ်ပြီး နှစ်ရက်လောက်မှာ သတင်းရတယ်။ အဲဒီကတည်းက အသေးစိတ် အချက်အလက်တွေကို စုံစမ်းနေခဲ့တာပါ။

A-အဲဒီကျေးရွာက အတွင်းငှက်သေကျေးရွာအုပ်စုထဲက ကျေးရွာငယ်လေးတစ်ခုပါ။ အိမ်တွေကို Google Earth ကနေ သေချာမြင်ရတယ်။ အဲဒီရွာနဲ့ ကပ်လျက် နောက်ထပ် ရွာငယ်လေးတစ်ရွာရှိတယ်။ ရွာကလူတွေကတော့ အေးအေးဆေးဆေး လုပ်ကိုင်စားသောက်ကြတဲ့ သူတွေပါ။ အခုတော့ တစ်ရွာလုံးနီးပါး ကုန်သွားပါပြီ။ ကျန်တဲ့လူတွေက မိသားစုအချို့က မိသားစုဝင် အချို့ပါ။ ဒါလည်း လက်ချိုး ရေတွက်လို့ရတယ်။

The ARNC has called on the ICC and other international and regional bodies to immediately open an independent investigation

The Arakan Rohingya National Council (ARNC) has issued a condemnation of what it describes as a mass atrocity committed by the Arakan Army (AA), following the massacre of over 600 Rohingya civilians in Htan Shauk Khan village (Hoinya Seeree), Buthidaung Township, on May 2, 2024.

According to a statement released by the ARNC on Monday, the massacre included the killing of entire families, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, burned alive or executed in cold blood.
